Coaching Development

Coaching elements

Coaching is one of the most important skills that a leader or manager can learn, it empowers staff to problem solve, helps them to become more resourceful, increases productivity and makes them less reliant of their managers. It is hard to see how any organisation wouldn’t want these benefits and many organisations are making the choice to train their staff in coaching skills.

It is most likely that for many managers the training they really need is to learn the key coaching skills which they can then use to support their staff along side other skills such as providing advice, guidance and direction. In this respect the challenge for leaders and managers to learn to flex their style and as Michael Bungay Stanier says, they need to be more ‘coach like’ rather than actual coaches.

In order to bring coaching successfully into an organisation it is also likely that it will be important to train up staff who are also able to offer formal dedicated 1:1 coaching sessions to staff and for this more formal and accredited training is needed.
